About us

The Historical Group was founded in 1972 to promote knowledge of the history of photography in all its aspects and to encourage the preservation of photographs, photographic equipment and documents relating to the history of photography.

Since June 1972, the group has continuously published articles on the history of photography, photographic archives and collections and information about early equipment and processes. They are published in the PhotoHistorian, the illustrated journal of the Historical Group.
It is also a vehicle for correspondence and queries. A number of Supplements have been produced, containing information for researchers, social historians and for archivists in dating images, people and events.

Meetings are held in London and Bradford and in other RPS regions. The group has a close connection with the Royal Photographic Society Collection at the National Media Museum in Bradford and encourages and publishes research linked to the collection. A programme of talks and visits to collections runs from autumn to spring with the AGM in May. There is usually an annual conference.

The Historical Group provides, along with the collection and library, a body of expert knowledge within the Society, on historical matters, and there is a special historical distinctions panel for gaining the Associateship and Fellowship in this field.
